Biotin Supplement Benefits
Many farriers and veterinarians recommend a using a biotin supplement. Horses using a biotin supplement will grow hooves faster and stronger If the horse has a biotin deficiency. Horses with thin, easily chipped or cracked hooves likely are deficient in biotin. There is scientific evidence that horses in this condition will benefit from supplementation. However, horses with normally healthy hooves will likely not benefit from biotin. If your horse receives an injury to the hoof; Biotin will probably not be of much help. Although you can cheaply get biotin hoof supplements, horses will not show results for several months.
Is Biotin the best hoof supplement I can get?
According to scientific data, a biotin hoof supplement is most effective for some horses. The recommended dosage for hoof improvement in horses is 20mg per day.
If your horse does not seem to be responding to biotin, Zinc Methionine may also be used as a hoof supplement. Zinc Methionine has shown to be absorbed better than zinc, and is proven to reduce hoof abscesses and hoof disease.
How long should I give Biotin to my horse?
It can take over 1 year to get a completely new hoof through regrowth. For this reason, if you are using a biotin supplement use it at least 8 months to be able to notice the effects. If you would like to continue after this, you may do so as long as needed.
